Protecting your login credentials—especially for tools like the MLS system, email and transaction management systems—helps prevent unauthorized access and potential data breaches. When traveling internationally, using a trusted VPN (Virtual Private Network) adds an extra layer of protection by encrypting your internet connection, making it safer to log into secure systems from unfamiliar or public networks. Taking these precautions helps safeguard your business and your clients’ trust. 

Password Requirements & How to Change Your Password 

NorthstarMLS enforces secure password standards. Passwords must be at least 8 characters long and include: 

• One uppercase letter 

• One lowercase letter 

• One number 

• One special character 

• Cannot be a recently used password 

Single Sign-On (SSO) System 

NorthstarMLS uses a Single Sign-On (SSO) process for streamlined access across tools like Matrix, Paragon and Flexmls via the central Dashboard. 

• To log in, navigate to the Dashboard site, click “Click Here To Login,” enter your credentials or select “Forgot Password?” if needed. 

• After logging in, click your name in the upper right to log out or change your password.

What is a VPN and Why Use It?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and the internet. This helps protect your data and login credentials—especially when using public or unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks such as those in hotels, airports or cafés while traveling. 

For real estate professionals accessing sensitive platforms like the MLS, transaction management systems or email, using a VPN is an added layer of protection. Even with strong passwords, accessing secure tools from international networks can pose a risk without encryption. A VPN ensures your connection is private and secure. 

Why It’s Important When Traveling Internationally 

Some international internet providers may block or restrict access to U.S.-based real estate platforms. Additionally, logging in from an unfamiliar location can cause your account to be flagged for suspicious activity or locked out. 

Using a VPN allows you to connect through a U.S.-based server, so your login appears as if it’s coming from home. This can: 

• Prevent account lockouts 

• Ensure consistent access to the NorthstarMLS Dashboard, Matrix, Flexmls, Paragon and other tools 

• Safeguard your data from interception on public Wi-Fi 

How to Get a VPN Before Traveling

First, check with your broker to see if they have a preferred VPN provider they want you to use. If they don’t have a preference, follow these steps:

1. Choose a Trusted VPN Provider

Look for a provider that offers:

• Strong encryption 

• A no-logs policy 

• U.S.-based server options 

• Apps for desktop and mobile 

• Fast connection speeds

NorthstarMLS does not endorse or support any particular VPNs, but here are some commonly used ones you can consider:

• NordVPN 

• ExpressVPN 

• ProtonVPN 

• Surfshark 

Most plans range from $5–$12 per month, and many offer trial periods.

2. Install and Test the VPN Before Travel

• Download and install the VPN app on your phone, laptop and any other devices you’ll use. 

• Log in and test your access to NorthstarMLS tools and systems while connected to a U.S. server. 

• Ensure that MLS tools, email and cloud systems work smoothly over the VPN.

3. Enable Auto-Connect for Extra Safety

Most VPNs have a setting to automatically activate when connecting to untrusted networks. This is helpful when joining Wi-Fi networks at hotels, conferences or airports.

Additional Tip for Brokers and Admins

If you manage a team or have multiple staff traveling, consider a VPN plan that allows connections on multiple devices or a small business plan. This ensures secure access across your entire team.
